Dental Insurance
Dental insurance provides coverage for expenses of dental services and supplies, including preventive care. Typically, dental insurance is divided into 4 main categories:

  • Diagnostic and Preventative (regular check-ups),
  • Basic Services (fillings, inlays, and crowns),
  • Major Services (bridgework and oral surgery), and
  • Orthodontia (braces).

Typically, all of these categories are standard, except Orthodontia, which is written as a rider to dental plans. Consult your Summary Plan Description for details on your plan.

Traditional dental plans work similarly to traditional medical plans, including a deductible, which must be satisfied first. Followed, by coinsurance, which varies depending on the category of care being received.

There are dental PPO and HMO plans available as well. They work under the same concept as the medical plans – if an employee seeks treatment from a network provider, the employee will receive the highest level of benefits. If an employee seeks treatment outside the network, it is either paid at a reduced benefit level, or not paid at all.
